Maybe they're good at Photoshop, can write a little Javascript and while they can say "Document Object Model" they don't really understand what that means. But, they can modify a Tumblr template.<BR/><BR/>A little farther, we have those who can set up Ubuntu Linux today. They think they're really on the edge, but it's all automated now so they have really accomplished nothing special.<BR/><BR/>Further, we have people who can program in Visual Basic 6, the "red beans and rice" of corporate software development. <BR/><BR/>Up a little more, we have those who can use Visual Basic .Net. These people can at least navigate a larger object model, but don't really know anything. Maybe they understand a little XML, but XSLT is beyond their comprehension. But, they can get a good job in the back office of a bank, or maybe Lexis-Nexis.<BR/><BR/>Then, you have those who can program in Java. They know what a midlet is, but have no idea how a garbage collector works. Many of these people use Ruby on Rails. Some of them work for Twitter.<BR/><BR/>Up from there, you have the C++ application programmer. This actually requires knowledge of object oriented programming. These people may have read Scott Meyers, and may know who Bjorne Stroustrup is but cannot pronounce his name. Many of these folks know the difference between early and late binding, function decorations, and multi-language programming. In a pinch, they can produce a DLL or module callable by others. They know the difference between C and PASCAL calling conventions.<BR/><BR/>Up further, you have C++ systems programmer. These people know the fundamentals of operating systems, can work with a team of maybe thousands of others to produce a major product, can inject inline assembler code when necessary. Many of these people work at Microsoft or Sun. Many of these people work on embedded systems and know what fixed point math is. They can use the kernel debugger.<BR/><BR/>Farther up, you have the people who can make device drivers. They completely understand OS security models, frequently use inline assembler, and seldom shower. Few of these people are married, so I'm guessing you're not one of those.<BR/><BR/>On a par with device driver programmers, you have 3D game programmers who can do matrix math in their heads. These guys can clean themselves up if they are going to the GDC, but mostly don't care. Very few of these people are in New York.<BR/><BR/>Near the top are those who think in Assembler and/or pure machine code. <BR/><BR/>At the very top are those who can design microcode for logic operations on the chip. These guys work at Intel, AMD, and a handful of other companies. You're not one of these guys. You're married.<BR/><BR/>So, where do you fall?
