R.I.P. Michael

"I grieve for him; but I also grieve for the culture that created and destroyed him. That culture is ours' and it is a lethal and brutal one: with fame and celebrity as its core values, with money as its sole motive, it chewed this child up and spat him out."

This guy says it better than I can.

R.I.P.

You see, friend, the problem here. Without Joe and the abuse we'd never have what he now have: the Michael Jackson catalog, legacy, memories, and this epic outpouring.

Everything will are celebrating, grieving, or disavowing is BECAUSE not DESPITE.

Without the story ("The Story") it would be just another celebrity death. Unfortunately, with Michael Jackson you cannot have one (the talent) without the other (the personal story).

To be historic, to become historic, is not based upon living a normal, sane, fun life.

I'll say it again. Art is pain.

R.I.P.? Sure. Alls I have to say is thank you to Michael, Joe, Quincy, Barry Gordy, Tito, Janet, LaToya, Bubbles, Emmanual Lewis, Priscilla, Eddie Murphy, Brooke Shields, Jermaine, and all them motherfuckers.

Had he not been chewed up and spat out, Thriller woulda never happened.

I guess the question is, Ty, is it worth it? Is MJ's legacy worth the child (and possibly children) thrown to the sacrifice?

I can't say. Nobody can. It's not our decision to make - but if I had a son who was as talented, I'm not sure I'd wish him the same success, even if it deprived the world of some beauty.

@ Ryan:

Good question and an even better observation.

Dunno. The siren song of fame and fortune and all that.

Given the outpouring, however, I guess it was worth it in some sick way.

But had it been my talented child(ren)...I don't know.

Michael Jackson will forever be that puzzle box that Pinhead carried around.

A never ending onion of crazy that will take forever to peel.

An amazing genius that was fucked up by his family and friends from the word go.

I think that the psychotherapy world will use him as an example for many reasons.

I came across your blog from a site that has you and my friend Jim Goad on it. I'm glad I did! Feel free to check me out on Forces Of Geek here in blog land.

PS - I was recently priced out of Park Slope and moved to Harlem.

Love,
Crystal
